The spaces feature open floor plans so inhabitants can customize the spaces for their needs. The circulation and orientation of the spaces allows for the units to be interconnected. In the future, interior walls can be removed to create larger spaces or partition walls can be added to make more, smaller spaces. High ceilings are featured in all of the units as well, creating an atmosphere that encourages creativity and thoughtfulness. For those with visual pursuits, the spaces were designed to feature a large 8’x12’ north facing window, providing soft and consistent ambient light throughout the day. The space features Cafe Barrio, an open air cafe that serves beer and wine in the evenings. The cafe provides an opportunity for interaction between the inhabitants themselves and the public. A place to share ideas and make new connections. Throughout the day and into the evening people have spirited conversations about politics, spirituality and the arts. The inspired mural, painted by local artist Vincent Cordelle, tells the same history of the UNAM mural using imagery and symbols relevant to the neighborhood of Barrio Logan and the border region. Each unit features a sleeping loft, which saves space in the unit for other purposes. Anchored by a high-speed ferry terminal with service to Ensenada and express trolley connections to Tijuana, this project reimagines the heart of the city as a hub of connection, culture, and civic pride. At the core of this vision is the relocation of the San Diego Convention Center to a state-of-the-art structure built above the existing trolley depot near Petco Park. This move eliminates the current convention center’s role as a barrier to the waterfront, unlocking the potential for an expansive new city park. Situated on the shared shoreline of San Diego and Tijuana, the park embodied the spirit of cross-border unity. However, in 2009, the construction of a secondary border fence drastically restricted access, reducing the park to a mere shadow of its original purpose. La Línea Borrosa seeks to restore this lost connection by creating a new binational gathering place—one where people can meet freely, without the separation of a fence. From the street, it presents a quiet, restrained face — a simple form that respects the neighborhood. Along the shared property line, it remains solid and protective. But toward the canyon, the house opens wide. Two sliding glass doors at the corner of the living room pull back to dissolve the boundary between interior and landscape. The home becomes a perch among eucalyptus trees, surrounded by light, shadow, and breeze. Here, connection is focused inward — not to the street, but to the canyon. Because of this geological history, the region features desert fauna and rock formation reminiscent of its oceanic past. The brief was to design five sculpture atelier where artists would live and work creating sculpture for the park. I decided to design a prototype for a studio that could be replicated. The studios would need large open spaces to work, good light, and a large door to bring in equipment and materials. A striking rock outcropping anchors the design—rather than being an obstacle, it becomes the heart of the home, its raw presence embraced by the building’s form. The cabins are designed to accommodate a single person for 4-5 days in silent meditation, no communication or technology allowed. Our cabin proposal is a contemporary interpretation of the traditional Latvian hut. The design of the space is based on the concept of passive stack ventilation. The cabin features a 19:12 roof that terminates at the top with an operable skylight that provides indirect light as well as a way to control ventilation. During the warmer months of the year, the skylight can be operated remotely to control air circulation.
